We took a 2 week cruise on Holland America’s MS Westerdam ship starting from Yokohama and stopping at Naha and Ishigaki in Okinawa, Hualien and Keelung in Taiwan and Kagoshima, Aburatsu, Kochi, Osaka and Shimizu in Japan before returning to Yokohama.

Another rainy day but it didn’t stop us taking a taxi ride to the Chikurinji Temple for a visit prior to walking closeby to the Kochi Prefectural Makino Botanical Garden.
Even in the heavy rain the Chikurinji Temple was beautiful and somewhat magical in the misty atmosphere. Chikurinji is a Shingon temple and is Temple 31 on the Shikoku 88 temple pilgrimage, the main image is of Monju Bosatsu. The temple is said to have been founded by Gyōki in the early eighth century.
From the Chikurinji Temple it was a short walk to the west entrance into the Kochi Prefectural Makino Botanical Garden. The beautiful gardens were established in 1958 as a tribute to Makino Tomitaro, a world famous botanist. Over 3000 species of plants are named on plaques.
We returned to the ship to dry out and relax after a rather wet day out. By the afternoon the rain had stopped but the clouds remained allowing me to grab a photo of Kochi from the ship before we departed for Osaka.
