During a Mediterranean cruise we did in 2013 we stopped at Naples where we had arranged for a day trip down the Amalfi Coast. On our return trip from the Amalfi Coast we stopped at Sorrento and had a wander around the streets.
Sorrento is a coastal town in southwestern Italy, facing the Bay of Naples on the Sorrentine Peninsula. Perched atop cliffs that separate the town from its busy marinas, it’s known for sweeping water views and Piazza Tasso, a cafe-lined square. The historic center is a warren of narrow alleys that’s home to the Chiesa di San Francesco, a 14th-century church with a tranquil cloister.
Lemons are grown in this area so everywhere we went there were lemons and lemon-based products for sale in the shops.
Limoncello, a digestif made from lemon rinds, alcohol, water and sugar, is produced in Sorrento. Other agricultural production includes citrus fruit, wine, nuts and olives.
