Cafes, Bars & Restaurants of Saint-Germain-des-Près, Paris

Apart from all the incredible city sights, monuments, art galleries, museums, opera houses, churches, cathedrals, cemeteries and the beautiful River Seine one of the delights of Paris must be the vast array of wonderful cafes, bars and restaurants. Nothing quite beats sitting down at one of the beautiful cafes by the roadside and watching the Parisian life go by you as you sip on your favourite drink and sample the local French cuisine.

This is a very brief collection of photographs of some great cafes, bars and restaurants I have visited in my few visits to Paris. These are all in the Saint-Germain-des-Près area where I have stayed on each occassion.

Cafe de Paris

Located at 10 Rue de Buci in the heart of Saint-Germain-des-Près, Cafe de Paris is a great spot to sit and drink or dine at the roadside. The cafe serves up may traditional French recipes and of course a wide selection of wines to go with the food.

Les Deaux Magots

This celebrated café was once the meeting place of the literary and intellectual elite of France. After World War II, many artists and intellectuals met in Les Deux-Magots, particularly philosophers, writers and artists such as Jean-Paul Sartre, Simone de Beauvoir, Albert Camus, Ernest Hemingway, Picasso, Boris Vian, and Juliette Gréco. The café takes its name from a nearby fabric and novelty shop which itself was named after a popular play in 1800 – Les Deux Magots de la Chine. ‘Magot’ is a term meaning a stocky figurine from the Far East. Two wooden statues representing Chinese mandarins (or magicians) are found inside the coffee house on a pillar.

Cafe de Flore

Only a block away from Les Deux Magots, Café de Flore (founded in 1885) is one of the most prestigious cafés in Saint-Germain-des-Près. Its name refers to Flora, goddess of flowers whose statue is located on the opposite side of Boulevard Saint-Germain. Many French intellectuals met at the café including Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir. The interior is decorated in Art Deco style with red seating, mahogany and mirrors.

Cafe Le Buci

Cafe le Buci is located at 52 Rue Dauphine in Saint-Germain-des-Près and sits at the corner of some major roads offering a great place to stop for a quick meal or drink.

Le Pré aux Clercs

Le Pré aux Clercs is a charming bistro which took the name of Pré aux Clercs at the corner of rue Bonaparte and rue Jacob, in the heart of Saint-Germain-des-Près.

Cafe Le Conti

Cafe Le Conti is located at 1 Rue de Buci in Saint-Germain-des-Près and strtagically placed on the corner of the street giving you a great viewpoint from one of the roadside tables.

La Palette

La Palette at 43 Rue de Seine is more than just a typical Saint Germain bar: it’s a magical place combining a hundred years of history with the typical artistic ambiance of the neighbourhood. A block away from the busy Rue de Buci, La Palette is a great place to have a meal at lunchtime or a drink on the cozy terrace

Bar du Marche

Situated at 75 Rue de Seine, on the corner of rue de Seine and rue de Buci, Le Bar du Marché (referred to as BDM by regulars) is popular with, but not limited to, the chic bobo youth of Saint-Germain-des-Prés. It attracts customers who are nostalgic for the village Paris and Bohemian Paris of the past. The red and white checked tablecloths and the waiters and waitresses who look like Parisian urchins give the place an old Parisian touch. The atmosphere is relaxed and trendy, and the large terrace is a lovely place to sit on summer evenings! You can snack on locally sourced finger food while enjoying classic beverages at reasonable prices.

La Citrouille

The Pumpkin Restaurant offers traditional French cuisine with specialty burgers and tartar.

The Highlander

This small bar tucked away up at 8 Rue de Nevers – an alley close to the Pont Neuf on the River Seine caught my attention given its name. Being Scottish myself I have a “Highlander” theme with my own Highlander Bar at my house and my web domains and social media for my photography being “HighlanderImages.

Relais Odeon Brasserie

Located at 132 Boulevard Saint-Germain, in the 6th district of Paris (near the Odeon Metro), the Odeon Relais is a great Parisian brasserie with modern decor that offers contemporary dining. The menu at Relais has traditional French bistro favorites, but also some American delicacies. The house Bordeaux is decent and there is an extensive beer list for those really missing a brewski from home.

Restaurant Pub Saint-Germain-des-Près

Located at 17 rue de l Ancienne Comedie the Pub Saint-Germain-des-Près offers a wide selection of beers.

Fish La Boissonnerie

Fish (La Boissonnerie) is a french restaurant and wine bar located in the lively 6th arrondissement of Paris at 69 Rue de Seine.

Le Petit Zinc

This is one of my favourite restaurants in Paris, located at 11 Rue Saint-Benoît, and I always try to eat there when I visit. If it’s a nice warm Summer evening it is great to get a table outside and enjoy the evening atmosphere and perhaps some jazz music by the local street performers. However it is always very comfortable inside the restaurant with some great food and wine available. My favourite dish ever is the foie de veau, or calf’s liver, – simply wonderful.
