Europe Road Trip – Day 10 – Budapest, Hungary

In September 2008 we did a circular road trip around Europe starting in Frankfurt, Germany and travelling through Germany, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Austria, Hungary, Czech Republic and finally back to Frankfurt Germany.

The next day we continued our exploration of Budapest. I took an early morning walk out on the quiet streets around the area our hotel was in.

Today we walked over the Széchenyi Chain Bridge and then took the short funicular railway up to Buda Castle.

Buda Castle

We did a short tour inside the castle. Buda Castle is the historical castle and palace complex of the Hungarian kings in Budapest. It was first completed in 1265, but the massive Baroque palace today occupying most of the site was built between 1749 and 1769. The complex in the past was referred to as either the Royal Palace or the Royal Castle.

Old Town

From the castle we headed along and into what is known as the Old Town.

At Fisherman’s Bastion we got incredible panoramic views over the city and the beautiful River Danube.

We then did a tour inside the National Archives of Hungary Building. The National Archives of Hungary were created in 1756. They were first located in Pressburg. In 1784, they were transferred to Buda.

We spent one more night in Budapest again enjoying some great food at the Nostalgia Restaurant then it would be a northward drive the next day out of Hungary and into the Czech Republic to reach the city of Prague.
