In September 2008 we did a circular road trip around Europe starting in Frankfurt, Germany and travelling through Germany, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Austria, Hungary, Czech Republic and finally back to Frankfurt Germany.

We had a whole day in Vienna to explore this fascinating city. We took the train into the centre of town from where we were staying and then walked around the city centre.
St. Stephen’s Cathedral

We visited St. Stephen’s Cathedral which is right in the centre of the city. The church was beautifully ornate inside and the roof of the church was made of unique coloured patterned tiles. St. Stephen’s Cathedral is the mother church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Vienna and the seat of the Archbishop of Vienna, Christoph Cardinal Schönborn, OP.

Vienna State Opera

In 1920, with the replacement of the Habsburg Monarchy by the First Austrian Republic, it was renamed the Vienna State Opera. The members of the Vienna Philharmonic are recruited from its orchestra.
We did a tour of the inside of the opera house during the afternoon which was very interesting and saw them setting up the stage for the concert that evening which we would be attending.
