Europe Road Trip – Day 8 – Vienna, Austria

In September 2008 we did a circular road trip around Europe starting in Frankfurt, Germany and travelling through Germany, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Austria, Hungary, Czech Republic and finally back to Frankfurt Germany.

We had a whole day in Vienna to explore this fascinating city. We took the train into the centre of town from where we were staying and then walked around the city centre.

St. Stephen’s Cathedral

We visited St. Stephen’s Cathedral which is right in the centre of the city. The church was beautifully ornate inside and the roof of the church was made of unique coloured patterned tiles. St. Stephen’s Cathedral is the mother church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Vienna and the seat of the Archbishop of Vienna, Christoph Cardinal Schönborn, OP.

St. Peter’s Catholic Church

The Peterskirche is a Baroque Roman Catholic parish church in Vienna, Austria. It was transferred in 1970 by the Archbishop of Vienna Franz Cardinal König to the priests of the Opus Dei.

The Hofburg

The Hofburg is the former principal imperial palace of the Habsburg dynasty rulers and today serves as the official residence and workplace of the President of Austria. It is located in the center of Vienna and was built in the 13th century and expanded several times afterwards.

The Schottenkirche is a parish church in Vienna attached to the Schottenstift, founded by Hiberno-Scots Benedictine monks in the 12th century.

Vienna State Opera

The Vienna State Opera (German: Wiener Staatsoper) is an Austrian opera house and opera company based in Vienna, Austria. It was originally called the Vienna Court Opera (Wiener Hofoper). In 1920, with the replacement of the Habsburg Monarchy by the First Austrian Republic, it was renamed the Vienna State Opera. The members of the Vienna Philharmonic are recruited from its orchestra.

We did a tour of the inside of the opera house during the afternoon which was very interesting and saw them setting up the stage for the concert that evening which we would be attending.

Franciscan Church

The Franciscan Church, also known as the Church of St. Jerome, is a Roman Catholic parish church dedicated to Saint Jerome and located in the historic city center of Vienna, Vienna’s 1st district. It is the church of the Franciscan Order in Vienna.

Evening Concert at Vienna State Opera

That evening we attended a wonderful concert in the Vienna State Opera. The orchestra was dressed in period costume making it a very colourful and musical evening.
