Aukland, New Zealand

In October 2006 we did a trip to New Zealand starting with a few days in the North Island covering Aukland and Rotorua. From Rotorua we flew to Blenheim in the South Island via Wellington. The bulk of the trip covered the South Island starting from Blenheim and driving around the island anti-clockwise visiting Picton, Nelson, Punakaiki, Hokitika, Franz Josef Glacier, Fox Glacier, Lake Matheson, Haast, Queenstown, Te Anua, Milford Sound, Dunedin, Moeraki, Oamaru, Mount Cook and finishing in Christchurch.

We stayed at a delightful B&B in Aukland which made for a comfortable base to explore the city. The owner had spent many years in Asia so the house was full of Asian furnishings and she also had an Indonesian house maid which of course made us feel right at home.

First stop was to visit the Sky Tower which is a telecommunications and observation tower located at the corner of Victoria and Federal Streets. It is 328 metres (1,076 ft) tall, as measured from ground level to the top of the mast, making it the tallest freestanding structure in the Southern Hemisphere and the 25th tallest tower in the world. It has become an iconic landmark in Auckland’s skyline due to its height and unique design.

The view from the top over the city was spectacular and the walkway at the top had glass windows you walked over allowing you to look directly down to street level.

We then took a walk up Mount Hobson which is a 143m high volcanic cone and gave us a wonderful panoramic view over the city.

Food in New Zealand was wonderful with fresh seafood, succulent fresh lamb and of course excellent local wines.
