The Garden Route, South Africa

In 2002 we did a wonderful trip to South Africa with a safari to Ngala Private Game Reserve on the edge of Kruger Park, then a drive along the Garden Route from Port Elizabeth following the southern coastline covering Plettenberg Bay, Knysna, George, Mossel Bay and then inland to Stellenbosch. During this trip we met up with friends who were also touring the area and did a bungee jump from the Gourits River train bridge and than an amazing freefall skydive with Skydive Cape Town just north of Cape Town.

After our safari at Ngala Ngala Private Game Reserve we flew from Hoedspruit to Port Elizabeth to start a drive along the southern coast to Cape Town. The Garden Route is a 300-kilometre stretch of the south-western coast of South Africa which extends from Mossel Bay in the Western Cape to the Storms River in the Eastern Cape.We arrived late into Port Elizabeth and then had one night in a small hotel on the outskirts of the city.

Storms River

The next morning we started our drive along the coast with a first stop at Storms River which had a magnificent bridge over the river gorge and an interesting forest walk at The Big Tree Tsitsikamma.

We then took a wonderful walk on the coastline at the Storms River Mouth which had an exciting suspension bridge crossing and some great views of the Southern Ocean.

Plettenberg Bay

We drove onto to Plettenberg Bay where we stayed for the night in a beautiful B&B overlooking the beach and the ocean

Robberg Nature Reserve

The next day we took a great walk out the Robberg Nature Reserve which was on a long peninsula at the end of the bay. We saw seals, wild birds and the local rock hyrax.

Whale Watching

On the next day we took a boat trip into the bay for whale watching. This was an incredible experience with close up views of large humpback whales right next to our boat. We also saw large colonies of seals on the rocks and an incredible display put on by a pod of dolphins diving through the waves.

Knysna/George – Outinequa Transport Museum

From Plettenberg Bay we headed further west along the coast to Knysna for one night there. The next day we made a visit to the Outeniqua Transport Museum at George.

We took a wonderful train trip on an old steam engine along the coast giving us some great views of the coastline and ocean.

After a hard day’s sight seeing we had a welcome dinner at the seafront in Knysna with Suit Yoo getting her fill of her favourite oysters.

Gliding

We had spotted a small plane flying over Plettenberg Bay during our visit there and we managed to contact the owner and arranged a flight for all of us. This was an incredible experience and gave some great views over the coastline and offered some views of whales in the ocean. When I flew the owner let me fly the powered glider and he guided me in and I actually landed the plane back on the runway!!

Mossel Bay

We headed on to Mossel Bay staying in a lovely hotel called The Old Post Office Tree Manor Hotel. We had a brief walk along the steep cliffs with views along to the Cape St Blaize lighthouse.

The hotel is named after the original post box which was in a milkwood tree and used be seafarers to leave mail.
