Montepulciano, Italy

In July 2003 we made a trip to Italy starting with a few days in the capital of Rome and then exploring Tuscany. All the images here were made with my original Canon D30 digital camera (the very first digital SLR from Canon) sporting a 3.1 MPixel sensor! It’s still satisfying to be able to reprocess these images with the latest software and get some pretty decent results.

Montepulciano is a medieval hilltop town in Tuscany, Italy. Surrounded by vineyards, it’s known for its vino nobile red wine. The Torre di Pulcinella is a clock tower topped by a figure of the Pulcinella, a commedia dell’arte character. On the Piazza Grande is the 14th-century Palazzo Comunale, with a tower offering views of the surrounding countryside. Also here is the Duomo, with a huge triptych above its altar.

After leaving Montepulciano we headed west on the SP146 road and shortly after passing through the small town of San Quirico d’Orcia on the SR2 road we saw a beautiful circle of cypress trees on the hillside which was worth the stop to take some photos. This is apparently quite an iconic view in Tuscany and changes throughout the year with the changing colour of the foliage.
