Musandam Road Trip

In 2003 during my time that I was working and living in Dubai, UAE we did a road trip to Musandam with a small group. We planned to camp in the desert and then take a small dhow trip.

Along the coast on the drive to Musandam we came across a wrecked shipping vessel aground on the rocky beach.

We reached Musandam later in the day and by the time we found a camp site on the valley floor it was dark. We set up the tents and had a small barbecue dinner. Our activity attracted the attention of the locals who came out of nowhere to see these strangers in the desert. The happily joined us for some snacks and soft drinks as we sat on the desert floor – the beer and hard liquor was quietly hidden away from them till they left!

At night with the clear night sky over the Oman mountains we got a magnificent view of the stars. I attempted to take a long exposure photograph of ths star trails.

In the morning we were greeted by the wonderful view of the rough valley we had camped in. This was a harsh and rugged environment but beautiful in its own way.

Once everyone was awake it was time for breakfast so I went to work with my portable cooking stove at the back of my Landcruiser. I’m sure the locals were full appreciative of the wonderful smell of bacon, eggs and sausages!

We then drove to a small port where we took a chartered dhow for a cruise along the coast.

Our boatman was constantly on his handphone as many of the locals were.

The coastline was stunning with deep azure blue waters and stark rugged mountains as a backdrop.

We anchored in a small bay where we could swim and snorkel to cool down.

This photo is NOT upside down ….. this was the boatman’s assistant who was on the roof of the dhow hanging down to look at us.

Arriving back in port a fishing boat had just docked and was unloading its catch of fish for the day.
