After arriving in Lima, Peru we decided to take a walk around the area close to our hotel in the affluent Miraflores area of the city. By chance we came across a small park called Parque Kennedy (named after the US President, John F. Kennedy) and walking through this small, well manicured park we noticed something strange. The park was full of cats ….. cats all over the grassy areas, in the bushes, and up the trees, most of them just lazing around. This park is well known as the home to over 100 stray cats for the last 20 years or so. No one knows how this park became a haven for cats but people also started to abandon their pet cats here assuming they would be cared for.
The cats are well cared for and there is a group called Grupo Voluntario de Defensa Felina that feeds the cats daily and carries out routine veterinary services. On the weekends they set up a booth in the park to assist in adoptions.
Around the periphery of Kennedy Park are some restaurants where we got our first chance to try some local cuisine and local beer. I tried the alpaca to eat which was delicious and I must say the local craft beers were excellent.
