Many people think that the most northerly point of UK mainland is John o’Groats but in actual fact it is the northern tip of Dunnet Head, known as Easter Head, close to the village of Brough in Caithness. Dunnet Head is a peninsula between Thurso and John o’Groats on the northern coastline of the Scottish mainland looking out to the Pentland Firth.
On a clear day you can get good views of Stroma to the east and the Orkney island of Hoy and the Orkney mainland itself 15 km to the north. However the day I visited there was sea fog and mist rolling in over the cliffs so little could be seen. I managed to capture a few fleeting images showing the steep cliffs below the Dunnet Head Lighthouse.
Just beyond the lighthouse at Easter Head you could walk right to the cliff edge, the wooden stake in the ground marking the furthest point which you should not go beyond. There were large numbers of nesting seabirds on the cliff below.
