Just on the outskirts of Newton Stewart in Dumfries & Galloway, Scotland is a wonderful walk through the woods of Cree. The area has number of trails running up through the woods and along the small rivers that run down to the main Cree River and is a great place to walk and take in the beautiful fresh greenery of the woods and the waterfalls.
The Wood of Cree is the largest ancient wood in southern Scotland and is a wonderful area to see a wide variety of wildlife. As well as wild flowers and a wide variety of birds you may get the chance to see otters at the otter platform down close to the main Cree River.
The wood is run and managed by the RSPB and the trails are well marked and easy to follow. It is a pleasant walk up the hill following the small river which has numerous small waterfalls. On the return walk back down the hill you will finish up at a spectacular large set of waterfalls.
After the walk through the woods you can visit the otter platform near the River Cree where you may be lucky enough to spot otters …. we weren’t as I guess you have to go very early or later in the day nearer sunset.
