On the banks of Loch Tay close to Aberfeldy in Perthshire, Scotland is a reconstructed iron age dwelling known as a crannog. A crannog is a dwelling built on a partial or entire artificial island in a lake, estuary or river in Scotland and Ireland. Crannogs were used as dwellings from the Neolithic Period to as late as 17th and early 18th century.

Crannogs are widespread in Ireland with around 1200 examples while in Scotland has 347 officially listed sites. The site at Loch Tay has a wonderfully reconstructed crannog with an informative guided tour to introduce you to life back in the iron age.

The crannog is built with timber to make piles or stilts which were driven into the bed of the loch to create a platform above the water to support the settlement. The house floor is covered with bracken and ferns and the roof structure woven with hazel branches.

During the guided tour we were given a lot of detail about how these people lived and traded and shown a variety of wood crafting tools that the occupants used to create cooking and eating utensils and how they would have made fire.
