Dingle Peninsula, Ireland

The peninsula in south west Ireland running to the town of Dingle and then out past the village of Ventry to the very point of Dunmore Head  is a stunning drive with some great sea views out to the North Atlantic Ocean. We stopped in Killarney for 3 nights so this gave us the chance to explore the area with one day dedicated to drive the Dingle peninsula.

Driving west out towards Dingle it is worth stopping to visit the splendid Inch Beach area which has a vast expanse of sand and is a popular place for swimmers and surfers.

As we made our way to Dingle we drove through a beautiful patchwork landscape of bright emerald green fields of different hues – an idyllic rural scene. It’s no wonder Ireland is called the Emerald Isle.

Dingle was a pleasant small fishing town with plenty of fresh seafood restaurants and of course many bars to replenish fluids.

On the road out west of Dingle we stopped at a site of an old circular cairn and met some of the local Irish wildlife.

The coast road heading westwards towards Dunmore Head became more dramatic and offered some great views along the steep cliffs over the sea and out to the islands.

At the most westerly point close to Dunmore Head was a good place to stop and take the walk out to the point of Dunmore Head. The steep cliffs were decked with some beautiful wild flowers and the views out at the very tip of the head were stunning. It was a fantastic walk and great to soak up all that fresh air.
