Streets of Subiaco

Subiaco (known colloquially as Subi) is an inner western suburb of Perth, Western Australia, north-west of Kings Park. Its local government area is the City of Subiaco.

Prior to European settlement the area was home to the Noongar Indigenous people. The area was settled in 1851 by Italian Benedictine monks. The monks named the area after Subiaco in Italy, the location where Benedict of Nursia, the founder of the Order of Saint Benedict, had begun his work.

Subiaco is best known for its markets, many boutiques, restaurants and jewellery outlets located along Hay Street and Rokeby Road. During the day, white collar workers walk the pavements. Evenings draw crowds to enjoy world-class dining and regular performances at The Regal Theatre. Easily accessible by train and only 5 minutes west of the city. The area is also a very popular residential area with a large variety of low rise houses from Victorian design through to modern houses. An interesting feature of the older houses are the many stain glassed Windows which can be seen on the doors and windows of the older properties.

The streets of Subiaco are a joy to walk through with some wonderful examples of Art Deco style and Australian style architecture. Many of the streets are tree lined with rich green foliage contrasting with the vivid purple of the Jaracanda blossoms.

Graffiti or “street art” can be seen on some of the buildings which add vivid colors and design to the older run-down buildings.
