Central Market, Phnom Penh

The large domed building of the Central Market in Phnom Penh is an iconic art-deco style landmark in the city and an active market. The distinctive yellow building was completed in 1937 and has an impressive 26-meter high central dome with four arch-roofed arms branching out diagonally forming large hallways for the many stalls selling their goods. The initial design was by city architect Jean Desbois and the construction works was supervised by French architect Louis Chauchon. When opend in 1937 it was reputed to be the largest market in Asia.

The entrances to the market are lined with souvenir merchants hawking everything from T-shirts and postcards to silver curios and kramas. Inside is a dazzling display of jewels and gold, electronic goods, stationery, secondhand clothes and flowers.
