Blyde River Canyon Nature Reserve, South Africa.

On the route from Hoedspruit to Johannesburg we made a stop at Blyde River Canyon Nature Reserve which offered incredible views over the deep canyon and the imposing Three Rondavels mountain range. Just before reaching the Blyde River Canyon Nature Reserve we made a brief stop at J.G. Strijdom Tunnel where we got a magnificent view of the large waterfall in the rocky escarpment.

Blyde River Canyon Nature Reserve  is situated in the Drakensberg escarpment region of eastern Mpumalanga, South Africa. The reserve protects the Blyde River Canyon, including sections of the Ohrigstad and Blyde Rivers and the geological formations around Bourke’s Luck Potholes, where the Treur River tumbles into the Blyde below.

The Three Rondavels are three round, grass-covered mountain tops with somewhat pointed peaks. They quite closely resemble the traditional round or oval rondavels or African homesteads, which are made with local materials.
