Second stop on our cruise was the Italian city of Ravenna on the west side of the Adriatic Sea. Ravenna is the capital city of the Province of Ravenna in the Emilia-Romagna region on Northern Italy. It was the capital city of the Western Roman Empire during the 5th century until its collapse in 476.

The Basilica of San Vitale is a large octagonal domed church which has some very impressive and richly coloured Byzantine mosaics.

Close to the Basilica di San Francesco is the tomb of the poet Dante, in a small neoclassical temple near the site of his funeral in 1321.

Basilica di Sant’Apollinare Nuovo is a church built by Theodoric the Great as his palace-chapel, listed by UNESCO for its religious art.

Battistero Neoniano (o degli Ortodossi) is an octagonal baptistery largely dating to the 5th century, renowned for its Byzantine mosaics.
