Lake Como, Lombardy, Italy

Lake Como, (known locally as Lario), in Northern Italy’s Lombardy region, is an upscale resort area known for its dramatic scenery, set against the foothills of the Alps. The lake is of glacial origin and is shaped like an upside-down Y, with three slender branches that meet at the resort town of Bellagio. It has an area of 146 km2 and is the 3rd largest lake in Italy after Lake Garda and Lake Maggiore. It is 400 m deep and the 5th deepest lake in Europe.

Lake Como is served by a public transport system with ferries, motorships and fast hydrofoil services connecting the various villages on the lake.

Lake Como has been a popular retreat for aristocrats and wealthy people since Roman times, and a very popular tourist attraction with many artistic and cultural gems. It has many villas and palaces such as Villa Olmo, Villa Serbelloni and Villa Carlotta. Many famous people have owned homes on the shores of Lake Como, including George Clooney, Madonna and Donatella Versace.

We stayed at the Sheraton Lake Como Hotel which was not directly on the lakeside but close enough to walk. Arriving at lunchtime we quickly headed out and found a fabulous small restaurant, La Tavernetta, close-by where we had an excellent lunch. The chef offered some superb mushrooms which he said he had collected on the mountainside earlier that day.
