Lake Clifton sits between Mandurah and Bunbury at the north end of the Yalgorup National Park In Western Australia. At the edge of Lake Clifton you can see the amazing rock-like structures called thrombolites built by tiny micro-organisms believed to resemble the earliest forms of life on Earth. It has been suggested that their presence there may be due to upwellings of fresh groundwater high in calcium carbonate. There is a wooden observation walkway allowing you to view these delicate structures. Thrombolites are very rare and extremely primitive and this is one of the very few places in the world where you can find them growing.
