Edinburgh, Scotland

Edinburgh is a famous historic city of Scotland with so many things to see and do there. It is close to my heart as this was my University town and where I spent a number of years studying as well as enjoying all the delights of the pubs and restaurants in the city.

It is always nice to return to Edinburgh as it is so familiar with a few changes however after all these years. Arriving into Waverley Station by train it is always worth going into the waiting room and admiring the magnificent and ornate glass dome ceiling. From the station you can walk past Brewhemia and up Fleshmarket close, a narrow steep alley that cuts up to the Royal Mile via Cockburn Street. Look out for the famous Jinglin’ Geordie pub on the way up.

Heading up to South Clerk Street we visited the excellent Kampong Ah Lee Malaysian restaurant for lunch. A walk around The Meadows is always nice and particularly at the time of year we visited as all the cherry blossom was out. It was nostalgic to look over The Meadows to where my son was born at Simpsons Maternity Hospital which has now been converted into the very upscale Quartermile Serviced Apartments.

Returning back down South Clerk Street was the impressive Surgeons’ Hall Museum and I also noticed the now abandoned Odeon Theatre where I have seen a number of famous bands such as John Martyn, Brand X and The Tubes back in my student days. In Hunter Square close to the Royal Mile you can see the famous gold post box in honour of the cyclist Chris Hoy, gold medalist.
