Glengarry Castle Hotel, Invergarry, Scotland

Glengarry Castle Hotel is a fine old country hotel on the outskirts of Invergarry and sitting on the banks of Loch Oich. The hotel has extensive grounds and a short walk along the banks of Loch Oich will bring you to the ruins of Invergarry Castle.

Invergarry Castle was the seat of the Chiefs of the Clan MacDonell of Glengarry, a powerful branch of the Clan Donald and it’s position overlooking Loch Oich on Creagan an Fhithich – the Raven’s Rock – in the Great Glen, was a strategic one in the days of clan warfare. It is not certain when the first structure was erected on Creagan an Fhithich but there are at least two sites prior to the present castle. It has been said that Bonnie Prince Charlie stayed here after the Battle of Culloden.

Just next to the castle in the loch is a wonderful old shipwreck, The Eala Bhàn (White Swan), which was wrecked on Loch Oich in a storm and lies here forever more at the foot of Invergarry Castle.
