Slieve League Cliffs (Sliabh Liag)

Slieve League Cliffs

The Slieve League Cliffs, sometimes Slieve Leag or Slieve Liag (Irish: Sliabh Liag), is a mountain on the south west Atlantic coast of County Donegal, Ireland. At 601 metres (1,972 ft), it has some of the highest sea cliffs on the island of Ireland. Although less famous than the Cliffs of Moher in County Clare, Slieve League’s cliffs reach almost three times higher.

After visiting the Cliffs of Moher the previous day we thought that we had already seen some high cliffs ….. well the Slieve League Cliffs were significantly higher by a factor of 3 and although not totally vertical such as the Cliffs of Moher, they were incredibly impressive.

IMG_1327We were recommended to view the Slieve League Cliffs from the very top and took what is known as the Pilgrim’s Path trail from the landward side up to the very peak of the cliffs. Starting from just behind the village of Teelin the trail took us on a steep track up the mountain, initially a single lane rough track and then ultimately near the top a small muddy path. It is well marked and easy to follow if reasonably fit.

As you got the higher the views back down over the village of Teelin and along the coast were wonderful.

At the very top you walk right to the very edge of the cliffs at the highest point giving you a dramatic view down to the sea. Of course there was the obligatory safety notice warning you of the dangers of the steep cliff faces.

On the walk back down we stopped to see the ruins of a very old church called McBric’s Church, hence the pilgrim’s path up to here that many made to visit this old religious site. This is a sacred mountain and for over a thousand years this was the site of Christian pilgrimages.

After the climb to the top and back we decided to visit the normal “tourist” view of the cliffs at the Slieve League viewing platform at the end of the peninsula past the village of Teelin. The view here of the cliffs was also very impressive. It was good to be able to see where we had been at the top some few hours before.
