Noumea, New Caledonia

Noumea, New Caledonia was our first stop on our 13 day cruise to Fiji from Sydney.

New Caledonia is a French territory comprising dozens of islands in the South Pacific. It’s known for its palm-lined beaches and marine-life-rich lagoon, which, at 24,000-sq.-km, is among the world’s largest. A massive barrier reef surrounds the main island, Grand Terre, a major scuba-diving destination. The capital, Nouméa, is home to French-influenced restaurants and luxury boutiques selling Parisian fashions.

The French influence is very apparent while walking around the town with the architecture and churches. We found the place very expensive which like many of the other islands in this region is due to the need to ship in almost everything.

We visited the beautiful Saint Joseph Cathedral which had a statue of Joan of Arc tucked around the side of the building.

There was some great grafitti on the walls of the town which I always love to photograph.

We walked around the Latin quarter of the town and eventually made our way down to the daily morning market (closed by this time) at the small harbour.

Some examples of Kanak art pieces could be seen in a small park close to Avenue Victoire Henry Lafleur.

The day was hot and it was time for a nice cooling local Manta beer before heading back to the ship.

Photographed this magnificent piece of grafitti in a disused lot just before getting on the transfer bus back to the ship.
