Djúpalónssandur is a dark pebbly beach that lies at the foot of the Snaefellsjokull area in the west of Iceland. The Dritvík cove is a few metres round the headland and has a similar beach.
This area has large areas of weirdly shaped volcanic rocks making the landscape look like an alien environment.
Originally, they were the most inhabited fishing villages on the Snæfellsnes peninsula, with over 60 trawlers and up to 400 inhabitants, but today it is barren. However, remnants of what used to be can still be seen, like the remains of the old Grimsby fishing trawler which was wrecked on the beach in March 1948.
Grimsby Trawler Shipwreck
On Saturday 13th March 1948 FV Epine (GY7) steam fishing trawler from Grimsby, England was wrecked on rocks at near Dritvík, Snæfellsnes, Faxafloi, west coast of Iceland in a severe gale and blizzard. An Icelandic rescue party got a line to the vessel and took four of her crew off by breeches buoy. One other crew member managed to swim ashore but fourteen of her crew were lost as heavy seas swept the wreck.
The wreckage of the doomed trawler can still be seen strewn over the rugged beach slowly rusting away.
Lifting Stones
On the shore of Djúpalónssandur, just down from the parking space, are four rocks of different sizes, mentioned in folk tales, on which people tried their strength in olden times: Fullsterkur (Strong), Hálfsterkur (Half-strong), Hálfdrættingur (Half-as-good) and Amlóði (Lightweight). These lifting stones were used by fishermen to test their strength and qualify them for work on the fishing boats. I tried to lift them and managed to make the half-as-good weakling status (54kg) which just qualifies me to be a fisherman!
